WTRRA RIDERS COMPETE IN IN-HAND TRIAL CLASS
Over the past few years there has been a growing interest in in-hand trail classes. For this type of class, the horse is led through, over or around various obstacles. In-hand trail is the perfect activity for everyone, regardless of age, experience or horsemanship skills. It also provides an excellent activity for horses that are too young or old to be ridden or those recovering from an injury. In-hand trail builds confidence in both human and equine as they work together to meet the challenge of maneuvering various obstacles. One of the biggest secrets to mastering this type of activity is to go slow and have the horse move in small steps so they maneuver with precision, not rush through the obstacle.
Recently two WTRRA adult riders, Heather and Levi, tried their hand at in-hand trail and had great time. Both participated in the 2009 Lemhi County Fair Open Horse Show, competing in the in-hand trail class for horses over 6 years old. There were eleven entries and the equines included a Miniature Horse, two Mules, a Paint and several Quarter Horses. Levi was showing his Paint mare, Cherokee, and Heather was showing Jeff and Katie Cooper's buckskin mare Leah. Heather placed sixth in the class.
